After Linay quit, Frank Puleo was unable to keep a secretary for longer than six months.
Linay liked being secretary to one of the firm’s big shots and put up with his moods and hectic schedule while rarely losing her cool. When she did, you could barely tell. She would cross her pretty legs and seethe silently. Even Puleo would avoid her when she was like that. It was not easy to annoy her and harder still to anticipate what would. One day she left out on the counter, a dozen swatches of carpet for Puleo to look over. All day long, lawyers, legal assistants and other support staff would pass by and comment. It was no different from the usual office chatter except that it involved small pieces of colored fabric instead of say, the Rangers, or the weather. But by the end of the day, Linay was so aggravated she was unable to go to her aerobics class. It is unclear what drove her to quit finally (apart from getting married), but you can’t entirely factor out the rumor that she wore a beeper which only her boss could remove. Or the part about how it could deliver low-voltage shocks if she didn't call in within five minutes. Even with an offer of a raise and a reduced workweek, Puleo was unable to coax her back to her post, outside his corner office.
