Mme. Soares teaches French and Spanish, but her first language was Portuguese which she speaks with her mother who lives in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark. Recently, to send off a very pregnant colleague, Mme. Soares brought in two bottles of champagne along with a box of pastries properly known as pastéis de Belém.
