In the late 70s there was a space station known as Skylab which eventually fell to earth in a blazing atmospheric reentry. Anyhow, the designers hadn’t thought to hang any Renoirs or even an American flag on the walls of the craft, which, like the uniforms, fixtures and equipment were mostly putty-whites, whites and greys. The astronauts eventually became so starved for more appetizing hues (and textures) that they took to staring at the color bars used to calibrate their instruments.
